The Thank You Note …

Your resume is on point, you nailed the interview- do you have to write a thank you note?

Well, do you want the job? If so, then YES!

It is so tempting to use the same two-line generic thank you note that you used last time- we get it- you have to get back to work, your kids, your dog, your yoga, and that last episode of GOT...but in all honesty- a well thought out, well written Thank you note is a game changer!

Top 5 Tips for the ULTIMATE THANK YOU note:

1) The Content.  What do you put in this bad boy?!--- Let us tell you:

  • First; thank the interviewer for their time;

  • Second; explain what qualities you possess that make you a match for this role;

  • Lastly; reiterate why you want this job and why you want to work for this specific company! (Easy peasy right?!)

2) Proof Read it. Spell check and grammar check are a must! Look it over twice- if you are like me… have someone else look it over too to be safe. It is the only piece of writing this company has seen from you since your resume. It. Has. To. Be. Perfect.

(And double check to make sure that any pieces you cut and pasted from another email have consistent fonts and text sizes throughout) You say you are detail-oriented… prove it!

3) Make it Genuine. Think of something you talked about it in your interview that impressed you about the company, or uniquely spoke to you. Make it personal to reflect the conversation you had in the interview. If you met a few different people- try to send separate emails that play up to this point- they often will share the thank you emails you send!

4) So You're Saying I've Got a Chance!  Is there anything you wish you could have changed about your interview- or something you forgot to add?! Here is your chance!

5) Tick-Tock. Try to get the thank you email or card over asap. It shows your interest level, follow through and demonstrates your writing skills! Plus some hiring managers are motivated to move the process along quickly and you do not want to be left out!

Stand out with your dynamite thank you. Blow the competition out of the water. Be authentic, be you! You got this. BURKE UP!
