Resume Refresh: Words, Phrases, & Sections to Ditch on Your Resume!

We all have noticed with the current climate of the job market that there are so many more applicants applying to the same roles. You need to stand out!

Your resume is a snapshot of your experience. It should be easy to follow, well organized, and only include information that is applicable to the job. You want to free up space to effectively highlight why you’re the right person for that particular role!

We’ve included some words/phrases/terms/add-ons you can cut out in order to free up some space and streamline your story.

Exclude – Your full address

Include – City & State

No one needs to know exactly what street you’re on, but including your city & state can help hiring managers determine if you are eligible for certain roles.

Exclude – Your references and “References Available Upon Request”

Include – A separate, ready-to-go references document

Providing references on your resume is kind of like introducing someone to your parents on a first date. You want to get to know each other first! We do suggest being proactive and having your references on hand for when you're nearing the final interview stages. Ideally include 2-3 supervisors/managers & one co-worker and have all their up-to-date contact info + titles. Make sure to have connected with them beforehand so they are ready to give a reference and you don't slow down the process.

Exclude - Hobbies & passions

Include – More relevant skills

Unless your extracurricular activities & interests relate to the position you are applying for, it’s better to leave those off. Utilize that extra space to include additional professional skills you possess. Tailor these items to what the role is requiring and ideally looking for!

Exclude – Headshots

Include – LinkedIn profile link

Most people are not applying to be on the cover of Vogue so your picture isn’t really necessary for a resume and can take up a considerable amount of space. Include your LinkedIn profile link, where you should have a professional-looking headshot front & center.

Exclude – Overused words like “rockstar, team-player, go-getter, hard worker, on time, career-oriented, managed, assisted, etc.”

Include –  New action verbs & synonyms

Some of these words are a bit played out – and ambiguous or do not add any real value. A company expects you to be a hard worker and on time. Try googling synonyms or check out the below articles for some suggestions!

Additional resources to make sure your resume is in top shape to get the interview!
